Michael Hess

stumbled upon this image by german-born, london-based photographer Michael Hess while exploring this site today and was instantly taken:

i’d never heard of mr. Hess, but he seemed to be up my alley, so i decided to do a little digging on his website. i found plenty to keep me interested, including a project on b-boys in London, a photo diary on women in Iran (not pictured), and more from his recently published collection, Bingo & Social Club.

Hess’ use of composition and tonality brings a rich nostalgic vibe to his work. but it’s the quality of light in these images i find particularly alluring. they evoke a kind of quiet excitement in me i can only relate to the surreal anticipatory calm that envelopes the world when the sky is heralding rain.

(did that make sense to anyone but me?)
